HISTORY

In 1884 the well-known architect Gedeon Majunke was finishing yet another project. Dr. Samuel Papp commissioned him to build this beautiful strut-framed house. Samuel Papp was living and working as a doctor in the village of Dolny Smokovec from the year 1883. The house was named after the ancient god Aesculap. Some other projects by Gedeon Majnke include "Kamzik", the government house in Stary Smokovec, Hotel Lomnica in the town of Tatranska Lomnica and the revamped Vila Janosik, currently named The Grand Hotel Kempinski in Strbske Pleso.

The house was built according to cross ground plans and the material used was wood and bricks. The house itself is constructed in the well-known Swiss style. The outside walls of the house are decorated with a form of graffiti representing ancient history. The main ornament on the house is Askepius' wooden walking stick.

Vila Kalinciak was given this name after the first Czechoslovak Republic was formed. In 2011 it was completely revamped and the attic accommodation was added.

Nearby you can find buildings in the same style which can be traced back to the 19th century.
